Rima Taha, Director of Comms at Huawei ME & CA shares her thoughts on accelerating action to take practical steps towards achieving gender equality in an exclusive chat with Techitup ME
What are your views on this year’s IWD 2025 theme “Accelerate Action”, how can we truly achieve diversity and inclusion in the workplace?
Rima Taha: I believe the IWD 2025 theme ‘Accelerate Action’ is a powerful call to move beyond “just” talk and take practical steps towards achieving gender equality. Successful diversity and inclusion in the workplace require a multi-faceted approach. It starts with leadership buy-in and setting measurable goals. We need to actively work against unconscious bias in hiring and promotion processes, have mentorship programs specially to empower women, and foster a culture where everyone feels respected and valued. Flexible working patterns and parental leave policies are also essential to enable women to balance work and family responsibilities. Ultimately, ‘Accelerate Action’ is about creating a workplace where everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive, regardless of gender.
Can you share your journey into the tech world and what inspired you to pursue this, where did it all start?
Rima Taha: Surprising as it sounds, my entrance into the world of technology initially began in an IT stable setting. I’ve got a qualification in Business Computer Management (Informatics), which means that, technically speaking, technology has been in my curriculum from day one. However, my passion for communication and storytelling led me to the field of public relations. It was when I was working with technology companies, and even now at Huawei, that these two spheres merged. I became fascinated by the power of technology to bring people together and create positive change and also inspired by the speed of this industry and the innovation it brings to the world day after day. Huawei’s core values, particularly its focus on innovation and customer-centricity, resonated well with me. I realized that good communication is paramount to the success of any tech firm, and I discovered my purpose in building the bridge between technology and people, leveraging both my IT background with communications expertise.
Who would you consider your role model, someone who constantly inspires you? (Does not really have to be from the professional world only, can be someone at home too)
Rima Taha: It might be a cliché, but MY MOTHER is MY IDOL. Although she is no longer here, the qualities she instilled in me every day still motivate me. She planted in me the need for hard work, resilience, and empathy. What’s most admirable about her is that even though she didn’t have the chance to pursue higher education, she had an unbelievable wisdom and insight, which influenced everyone around her. She made me realize the need to chase dreams and never lose hope, no matter what, and there is nothing to stop intelligence and determination from flourishing beyond university. She continues to inspire me, reminding me that success is not only about personal achievement at work, but also about making a positive difference on the world around you, something my mother conveyed in her everyday life.

What advice would you give to women starting off their careers, aspiring to enter the tech/business field?
Rima Taha: My advice would be to be bold, confident, and never give up on knowledge. Don’t be afraid to take chances and challenge yourself. Find a good network of inspiring women who can guide you. The tech and business sectors can be challenging
