The OPPO Reno16 5G combines a refreshingly compact design, capable cameras, a beefy 6,700mAh battery, and a set of genuinely useful AI features — but 256GB storage and its mid-range chipset leave room for debate.
By Christopher David, Founder & Managing Editor at Techitup Middle East.
There is a lot to be said about a smartphone that doesn’t try too hard.
The OPPO Reno16 5G isn’t trying to break benchmark world records at AED 2,499, nor is it attempting to out-spec flagship phones twice its price. But after spending some quality time with it, I found myself appreciating it for something far more practical: it’s comfortable to hold, easy to use, takes very good pictures, lasts forever on a charge, and packs in handy software tools without feeling overcomplicated.
And to be honest — the size alone is super useful and practical.
Having used larger devices, the Reno16 immediately feels noticeably more compact in hand. Its 6.32-inch display and refined dimensions make single-handed use effortless. For me, that’s a bigger win than it sounds. Not everyone wants a device that feels like carrying a mini clipboard in their pocket. You can stretch that index finger that your phone rests on, much lesser now.
Priced at AED 2,499 in the UAE for the 12GB + 256GB retail variant, the Reno16 5G enters a competitive mid-premium tier. So, is it worth your hard-earned money? Let’s break it down.
OPPO Reno16 5G Design & Build: Compact Done Right
The first thing you notice when picking up the Reno16 is just how natural it feels in the hand.
At 6.32 inches, it steps down from the taller profiles we’ve seen in previous iterations. OPPO has crafted this device with nicely curved bezels, rounded corners, and a balanced weight distribution (around 182g to 193g depending on the finish).

The build feels rock solid. The back panel appears to be glass, giving it a premium look and feel. What’s really cool is the subtle 3D-like pattern running underneath the back surface — it catches the light nicely and gives the phone a brilliant depth without looking flashy.
The edges are clean, the frame feels tight, and you aren’t constantly shifting your grip just to reach notifications at the top of the screen.
OPPO kept the overall aesthetic clean and modern. It manages to feel like a properly built, high-end device without becoming bulky. If you appreciate ergonomics and clever design details over sheer screen size, you’ll love this form factor.
The Reno16 also comes with an impressive IP69K rating (plus IP68/IP69), meaning it’s certified against high-pressure water jets and heavy dust exposure. It gives you serious peace of mind against spills or sudden rain — just make sure the USB-C port is fully dry before plugging it in to charge.

OPPO Reno16 5G Display: Punchy and Bright Enough
The 6.32-inch AMOLED display sports a crisp 2640 × 1216 resolution, smooth 120Hz refresh rate, and up to 1,800 nits’ peak brightness. You need this more than ever under the Dubai Sun.
In day-to-day use, I rarely needed to push brightness past 50%. Indoors, it’s crystal clear, and outdoors under the harsh UAE sun, visibility remains solid. Colours are vibrant without looking unnaturally oversaturated, and moving through social feeds or web pages feels snappy thanks to the 120Hz panel.
The smaller canvas works in its favor here too. Pixel density is sharp, and watching videos or reading articles feels comfortable without overwhelming your hand.
OPPO Reno16 5G Performance: Smooth Daily Driving
Under the hood, the UAE Reno16 5G runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 4.
A quick note on memory: The official UAE retail model comes configured with 12GB RAM + 256GB storage. My review unit displayed 8GB physical RAM + 16GB RAM Expansion in the settings. Remember that virtual RAM uses internal storage, so it isn’t the same as native physical memory. Retail buyers in the region will be getting the full 12GB physical RAM configuration.
In daily operation, the phone performs smoothly. Opening apps, multitasking, and scrolling through ColorOS 16 are completely lag-free.
I didn’t put this unit through heavy gaming stress tests, so I won’t make grand gaming benchmark claims. However, OPPO includes its dedicated game booster modes, and the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 handles everyday tasks and casual-to-moderate gaming without breaking a sweat.
Naturally, some specs-first buyers might question the choice of a 7-series chipset at AED 2,499 when performance-heavy alternatives exist. But OPPO’s lineup logic says: if raw power and maxed-out specs are your top priority, the Reno16 Pro 5G exists higher up the range at AED 3,299 (with 512GB storage and a higher-tier processor). The standard Reno16 aims squarely at everyday balance.
OPPO Reno16 5G Battery Life: 6,700mAh Delivers
This is easily one of the strongest highlights of the device.
OPPO managed to pack a massive 6,700mAh battery into this relatively compact chassis, paired with 80W SUPERVOOC fast charging.
I don’t sit around doing synthetic battery drain tests with endless spreadsheets, that’s not how real people use phones. What I can tell you is that in normal everyday usage, getting through a full day is an absolute breeze.
Whether you’re taking calls, shooting photos, streaming video, or replying to emails, the battery gives you complete peace of mind. Heavy power users will obviously drain it faster, but for normal life, you won’t be hunting for a wall outlet mid-afternoon. And when you do need a top-up, the 80W charger gets you back in action quickly.
OPPO Reno16 5G Camera: Clean Shots and Fun Zoom Capabilities
OPPO equipped the Reno16 with a versatile triple 50MP rear camera system:
- 50MP Main (with OIS)
- 50MP Ultrawide
- 50MP Telephoto (3.5x optical zoom with OIS)
- 50MP Front Camera (100° wide view)
From the shots I captured across standard photo mode, portraits, and pop-up creative modes, the results are consistently pleasing. Image output is clean, details are sharp, and colors pop nicely without looking fake.
The 3.5x optical telephoto lens is genuinely useful for framing portraits or street shots without losing detail.

Then there’s the headline digital zoom: OPPO allows up to 120x zoom. Now, let’s be realistic — 120x digital zoom isn’t going to produce a pristine, gallery-worthy photo. But as a practical tool to pull distant text, signs, or objects into view from far away, it’s surprisingly effective and fun to experiment with.
The camera app also includes creative modes like Pop Cam (with vintage film filters) and Popout 2.0 for quick social-ready edits.
ColorOS 16 & Useful AI Features
AI is being plastered onto every smartphone press release these days, but the Reno16 actually includes a few features you’ll use past day one.
The Highlights:
- AI Mind Space: A dedicated space accessible via the Smart Sidebar / AI Snap Key where you can drop screenshots, text, and voice notes for quick retrieval and AI processing later. It acts like an intelligent catch-all tray for your day.
- AI Translation & Writing: On-device translation (AI Menu Translation, Live Translate) and writing polish tools built into the UI.
- Smart Sidebar: The quick-access side drawer remains one of ColorOS’s best features for hopping between favorite apps on the fly.
Note: Certain AI tools like AI Scribe can vary in availability depending on region and software build updates and use an installable plugin.
Ecosystem Baggage
The only minor annoyance remains the dual-app-market setup. Having OPPO’s native app store running alongside Google Play Store can occasionally lead to duplicate update prompts. It’s far from a dealbreaker, but keeping things lean requires a quick setup tweak.
Sound, Connectivity & The Storage Caveat
- Connectivity: You get full 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, eSIM support, and USB-C.
- Audio: The built-in speakers sound clear and surprisingly punchy. They give a slightly acoustic, “boxed-in” resonance that amplifies lower beats nicely when placed on a desk. It won’t replace a dedicated Bluetooth speaker, but it’s great for casual media consumption.
- Storage: My primary critique lands on storage. The Reno16 5G comes with 256GB internal storage with no microSD expansion slot. Between 4K video recording, high-res 50MP photos, and large app sizes, 256GB can fill up faster than you think. I would have loved to see a 512GB option for the base Reno16 model rather than having to jump to the Pro version for more space.
OPPO Reno16 5G Price & UAE Lineup Overview
Here is how the official UAE OPPO Reno16 family breaks down:
| Model | Official UAE Price | Memory / Storage |
| OPPO Reno16 F 5G | AED 1,799 | 8GB + 256GB |
| OPPO Reno16 F 5G | AED 2,099 | 12GB + 256GB |
| OPPO Reno16 5G (Reviewed) | AED 2,499 | 12GB + 256GB |
| OPPO Reno16 Pro 5G | AED 3,299 | 12GB + 512GB |
At AED 2,499, the standard Reno16 5G gives you a premium triple-camera layout, a compact build, and a massive 6,700mAh battery without pushing past the AED 3,000 mark. However, relying on the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 and capping storage at 256GB does cause a bit of a pushback at this price point.
OPPO Reno16 5G: The Verdict
The OPPO Reno16 5G isn’t trying to win a pure hardware spec battle. Instead, it focuses on the things that actually impact your daily experience.
It’s comfortable to hold, the battery easily lasts a full day, the triple 50MP camera setup takes sharp photos, and tools like AI Mind Space add real utility. If you want maxed-out internal storage or ultra-heavy gaming performance, you may want to look at the Reno16 Pro or performance-centric rivals. But if you want a reliable, beautifully built compact daily driver that gets the core fundamentals right, the Reno16 5G makes a very convincing case.
Yes, especially if you prioritize a comfortable compact design, long battery life, fast charging, and strong camera performance without carrying a massive phone.
With its 6,700mAh silicon-carbon battery and efficient screen, it comfortably lasts through a full day of typical usage.
The retail price for the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage version is AED 2,499.
