Huawei reinforced its commitment to data protection and cybersecurity resilience at a media briefing during GISEC GLOBAL 2025, emphasizing a multi-layered approach to combat evolving threats. The briefing featured key insights from Yongjian Li, President of Data Protection, Huawei, Dr. Zhu Shenggao, Vice President of AI at Huawei Cloud Middle East & Central Asia; and Richard Wu, President of Security Product Domain in the Data Communication Product Line, Huawei. The session was moderated by Colm Murphy, European Cybersecurity Center, Huawei, who highlighted the company’s innovative solutions and strategic investments.
The session, themed “Establishing a Unified Cybersecurity Foundation to Safeguard the Expanding Digital and Intelligent Landscape,” underscored the growing importance of data protection in the face of increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks, particularly ransomware.
Colm Murphy kicked off the discussion by emphasizing Huawei’s unwavering commitment to research and development. “In 2024, Huawei invested USD 24.6 billion back into R&D, which accounted for 20.8% of its annual revenue,” Murphy stated. “The company’s total R&D investment over the past decade amounts to USD 171.1 billion, reflecting its dedication to continuous innovation in cybersecurity.” He further noted that Huawei currently has more than 3,000 cybersecurity R&D personnel, with 5% of its R&D spend focused exclusively on boosting the security of its products.

Yongjian Li then took the stage to detail Huawei’s groundbreaking approach to data protection and storage security. He introduced the industry’s first multi-layer coordinated protection solution for storage environments, emphasizing how it transforms enterprise security posture from reactive to proactive threat containment.
Global losses from ransomware attacks are expected to reach $57 billion this year, but the impact goes beyond financial damage to disrupt critical services. “To combat ransomware, Huawei has pioneered the industry’s first multi-layer coordinated protection solution, delivering active defense rather than passive protection across storage, network, and cloud environments,” Li explained. He highlighted the solution’s key capabilities, including a 99.99% ransomware detection rate through SAN/NAS scanning combined with innovative decoy files.
Li further emphasized the importance of end-to-end encryption and rapid recovery validation. “Key capabilities include: 99.99% ransomware detection rate through SAN/NAS scanning combined with decoy files; End-to-end encryption from production to backup to isolated zones to prevent data leaks; 5x faster recovery validation via automated backup drills, ensuring clean/usable backup copies,” he stated. “This transforms enterprise security posture from reactive to proactive threat containment.”
To further enhance data protection, Li unveiled the all-new OceanProtect E8000, featuring a 3-in-1 converged architecture that integrates backup software servers, short-term retention storage, and long-term retention storage into a single system. This innovation delivers significant performance and efficiency gains.
“This year, Huawei introduced the all-new OceanProtect E8000, featuring a groundbreaking 3-in-1 converged architecture that integrates backup software servers, short-term retention storage, and long-term retention storage into a single system,” Li explained. “The key advantages over industry alternatives include 5x faster recovery performance that can restore 1 TB of data in just 20 seconds, and high-density 2PB/2U capacity that saves up to 90% rack space compared to a conventional solution.”
Li emphasized that the OceanProtect E8000 provides organizations with both comprehensive protection and rapid recovery capabilities in a single integrated system. “Organizations today need comprehensive protection and rapid recovery capabilities,” Li said. “With OceanProtect E8000, we’re providing an single integrated system that dramatically reduces complexity while enhancing security.”
By combining its multi-layered protection solution with the innovative OceanProtect E8000, Huawei is empowering organizations to build a more resilient digital future and safeguard their critical data assets.
Cybersecurity and user privacy protection are Huawei’s top priorities.
