Inspire Inclusion: Celebrating International Women’s Day with a Call to Action

International Women’s Day 2024 stands under the evocative theme of “Inspire Inclusion,” a call to action that beckons us towards a vision of society where gender equality transcends mere aspiration to become our lived reality. This year’s theme challenges us to dismantle the entrenched barriers of prejudice, bigotry, and stereotyping, advocating for a world that acknowledges and celebrates diversity in its myriad forms.

As we reflect on the strides made towards Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)—a movement with its origins in the tumultuous era of the 1960s—we find ourselves pondering the road that lies ahead. Despite the arduous journey, there is tangible progress that fuels our hope. Particularly the upward trajectory of women in technology, where, according to the World Economic Forum, the representation of women in leadership roles has seen a significant increase, climbing to 30% globally between 2016 and 2022. This momentum showcases the potential for change and serves as a clarion call for sustained effort and unwavering commitment to the cause of gender equality.

It is mindboggling to know that while we women are at 30% in the technology sector, it is still 20% lower than the desired levels; technology has no gender barriers. Are the women being fortified enough? Are there any governing rules enforced by organizations on the percentage of women who should be in leadership roles? Are women feeling challenged by the glass ceiling that is inadvertently there or are they simply unwilling to take higher roles due to the societal norms, underrepresentation, or compelled family responsibility? Are women bracing a forced smile while on the inside they are struggling with the narrow-mindedness glaring at them in all walks of life, personal and professional? Intriguing questions that have straight, resounding answers.

“Inclusion” is an unconscious bias wherein every person, by default, has preference for people from their race, religion, country, background, gender etc. Overcoming this inherent bias that we are born with requires a lot of hard work ourselves more than others. The grit and determination to rise above our innate behaviors and embrace others at all levels what will transform our societies, nations, and the world. To help every individual overcome the unconscious bias, there is a dire need to “Inspire Inclusion” by educating and encouraging every individual to comprehend what Inclusion means.

A very interesting case study “Thoughtworks China” published by WEP (Women’s Empowerment Principles) provides insights on the journey from 2012 up to 2021, where in a yearly goal was set to help bring focus on women in technology. It has taken 9 years to bring the 42% women in technology roles by progressively taking informed decisions to encourage, train and upskill women. The study also mentions the importance of commitment and active engagement from management to promote gender equality across the organization.

Fostering Inclusive Recruitment and Career Advancement

To maximize the potential of finding the right talent for vacant positions, it is essential to implement measures, processes, and practices that are designed to attract a diverse range of candidates. This includes challenging stereotypes and unfair judgments based on unconscious bias, particularly those that discourage the hiring or promotion of women. Organizations should strive to create a hiring environment where credibility and selection are based solely on talent and performance. To achieve this, clear criteria for Key Result Areas (KRA) and Key Performance Indicators (KPI) should be established and met with evidence during the promotion process. A critical observation in many organizations is the imbalance in gender representation, especially at leadership levels. Despite having a significant percentage of women in the workforce, their representation diminishes as one ascends the corporate ladder.

To address this, organizations must identify and eliminate barriers that prevent women from advancing in their careers. This includes promoting a healthy work culture, removing conversations that undermine women’s morale, and creating emotionally safe zones for women to thrive. Additionally, tailored mentorship and leadership training should be provided to women, coupled with measures to ensure a balanced hiring ratio at all levels.

Furthermore, gender metrics should be mandatory for all recruitment and performance review teams, and the organization’s progress should be monitored against these metrics. To achieve “Intentional Inclusion,” it is crucial to provide adequate guidance and opportunities for transformation.

Enhancing Workplace Culture and Diversity Recognition

Removing barriers and promoting a culture of inclusion are pivotal in fostering a diverse and vibrant workforce. This involves systematically educating all employees about the benefits of a diverse workforce, which include enhanced creativity and innovation.

Recognition plays a significant role in building a positive workplace environment. Celebrating the exceptional contributions of women not only on an individual but also on a team, unit, and organizational level, is vital for acknowledging their value and boosting their visibility. Such recognition helps in improving morale, productivity, and the overall image of the organization as a champion of diversity and inclusion. It sends a strong message that diversity, identity, and talent are valued and celebrated, thereby encouraging a more inclusive and respectful workplace culture.

“We need to give each other the space to grow, to be ourselves, to exercise our diversity. We need to give each other space so that we may both give and receive such beautiful things as ideas, openness, dignity, joy, healing, and inclusion.” — Max De Pree, “Leadership is an Art.”

On this Women’s Day, let us unite in the commitment to fostering inclusion and elevating gender equality across all sectors, not just in technology. The call for organizations worldwide to engage in continual DEI efforts underscores the necessity for deliberate, sustained actions aimed at closing the gender gap. By setting clear targets and rigorously pursuing them, we can create an environment where inclusion is an ideal and a reality. Let us inspire change, champion inclusivity, and work together towards a world where everyone, regardless of gender, is afforded equal opportunities and respect. Happy International Women’s Day – let us make it a lighthouse for ongoing progress and equality.
